The town of South Padre Island is the southmost 6 miles of the 113 miles of Padre Island.  We expected a tourist economy and that’s what’s on the island:  Small groups of apartments, condos, T-shirt shops, convenience stores and restaurants.  More than a few of them feature sandcastles.

The beach, even in the developed section of the island, was beautiful and uncrowded.

Sandpiper

At the end of the road was a geocache.

The dunes were blown onto the northern section of the road.

The sand is working its way up this survey marker.

This land, with its dramatic dunes, is for sale. It’s a thousand feet wide from bay to Gulf.

We didn’t see a lot of shells on the beach, but some of them made a nice contrast with the sand in the late afternoon light.

The dune is being eroded near the road.
