Our favorite exhibit from this museum is a MAN, a German Machinefabrik Ausberg Nerenberg, reportedly built for Porfirio Díaz who served seven terms as Mexico’s president between 1876 and 1911. The car was hidden in a secret room behind a brick wall in 1911. Decades later, a horse kicked a hole in the wall, revealing the vehicle.
The interior of the MAN featured leather, cut crystal, and rare walnut veneers.
The driver, mechanic and doorman would have sat here.
The Stillman House, built in 1850, is part of the Heritage complex and is one of the oldest structures in Brownsville.
The exterior of the Stillman house is American Greek Revival.
The home’s interior shows Creole, Caribbean, African and Native American influences. This is the parlor.
James Stillman wore this court presentation suit when he was granted an audience with Britain’s King Edward VII and Queen Alexandria in 1909.
The kitchen was separated from the main house.
