Custer’s population is less than 2000 but its volunteer fire department put on a show worthy of a city any size. Viewing sites had been staked out at various locations throughout town, but Pageant Hill had been set aside for the day and people gathered there from all over.
The Planters Peanut truck was there.
Kettle corn was available. People brought lawn chairs and picnic blankets, flatbed trucks with couches.
We found a spot in front of 40 Boy Scouts from Indiana.
Fire equipment was driven through town, lights flashing and sirens blaring, to let residents know the festivities were at hand.
Music covered the hill and, finally, the fireworks began.
There was a little gridlock after the fireworks, but we won’t mention that.
