Several geocaches in the Lakeview area had never been found. We set out to find one near the fire lookout tower on Horsefly Mountain about 50 miles west of Lakeview. We were grateful for the Jeep because in this case getting there was not part of the fun although the forest was pretty. Google Maps took us about eight miles down a rough dirt road that suddenly dead-ended. After studying the maps on our phones we found a successful route to the tower.
Dave accepted the fire-watcher’s invitation to climb up the tower. Jane respected her fear of heights and stayed below to find the geocache.
The tower was built in 1934 and replaced in 1961. It’s about 13 feet square and has an elevation of 6,466. Cecelia was working as an independent contractor and had recently extended her initial 60-day contract for another 60 days. She discovered the Cougar Peak fire the day before we arrived in Lakeview.
