Mount Rushmore is so much a part of popular culture that it’s hard to know what to say about it. It was carved from 1927 to 1941. The faces are about 60 feet tall and feature four presidents chosen by the sculptor for their specific contributions to the history of the United States: George Washington for its birth; Thomas Jefferson for its growth; Abraham Lincoln for its preservation; and Theodore Roosevelt for its development.
Each evening Mount Rushmore has a ceremony during which the sculptures are illuminated. The audience is reminded of how its diverse population and interests made the country what it is today. Service men and women (both active and veterans) and their families were recognized; “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” were sung. Lights were turned on the statues and veterans retired the colors.

We just left Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park. Gorgeous country. The sculptures are awesome and the stories behind the sculptors and their workers are truly jaw dropping. We arrived today at Devil’s Tower.

We are on similar paths, at least temporarily. We were at Devil’s Tower last week. We leave Belle Fourth tomorrow for Medora, ND. The Black Hills are wonderful. We thought we’d be here two weeks and we’ve been here three and a half. Of course, some of that was catching up on things–bills and blog entries. But I won’t spoil the glamor of the lifestyle.
