We took scenic highway 38 and stopped at the Elkton Community Education Center. We completed a multi-part geocache that took us by this sculpture.

The property features a reconstruction of Fort Umpqua, a trading post and built by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1836.

Replica of the original fort which was located a few miles away.
Replica of the trading post. One beaver pelt could be exchanged for a blanket, two tin pots, a beaver trap, 12 yards of cloth, a flint, a looking glass, 30 tobacco heads or 1 8-inch file.
Replica of barracks. The governor of Oahu, Hawaii sent 10 men each year to work at the fort.

A herd of Roosevelt elk live closer to the coast.

As we drove into Reedsport, we saw some of the pieces created in a chainsaw competition.

When we visited the Oregon coast in 2018, we marveled at bridges designed by Conde McCullough in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Bridge over the Siuslaw River in Florence, Oregon
Signpost reminding us of our winter home in Casa Grande: Florence is the seat of Pinal County.

The weather was sunny and warm when we left the RV for our adventure. The coast was gray, windy, and 30 degrees cooler.

We were lucky to get a few glimpses of the misty surf.
