The fourth Caldwell County jail was built in 1908-09 with proceeds from a $25,000 bond issue.  Its five stories contain nine main cells divided into smaller compartments.  The sheriff and his family lived on the ground floor.

Today the Historical Society operates a museum on the first floor.  Many of the items exhibited were donated by local residents.

Looking at the size of these keys, it’s easy to understand why Andy and Barney hung the keys to the Mayberry jail on a peg.

We thought the graffiti throughout the jail told many stories–who was incarcerated, what interested them, and the time they had to make their deep and detailed marks.

Here’s someone who finds the jail hospitable.

A view of the new jail from the old one which was used until 1983.
