The Virginia and Truckee Railroad offers a railbike excursion into the Carson River Canyon from its Carson City, Nevada depot. We thought it would be a unique way to celebrate Jane’s birthday.

Railbikes ready to go. There were six bikes of two customers each and two staff bikes on our trip.
We didn’t have anyone in the backseat. Less weight but all the pedaling!
Ready to go!
The railbikes have motor assist for going uphill. Going downhill wan’t too bad except for the short instances when the tracks leveled off.
It wasn’t far from here that Jane wanted to take a picture and reached into her pocket for her phone and didn’t find it. Several people in the cars behind us saw it on the ground but couldn’t stop and retrieve it. Jane sheepishly reported the loss when she arrived at the turn-around and the staff in the last railcar went back and retrieved it. Whew! Jane did NOT want [to have to pay for] a new phone for her birthday!
We stopped at the site of an old stamp mill where gold ore was pulverized and here at the site of a stage stop.
