We woke to a gray day, a result of fires in British Columbia. (The Canadian border is about 80 miles north of us.)

We looked at a map of interesting geocaches, chose a direction, and took off.

The Wells Dam was built in the 1960’s by the Douglas County Public Utility District #1. The PUD was one of the first non-profit locally-owned utility districts in Washington State and was formed when private utility companies refused to bring electricity to rural areas.

The Wells Dam combines powerhouse, spillway, switchyard, and fish facilities in one building.
One of the turbines was replaced and the old one was put on display.
Turbines become pitting due to cavitation–the formation of air bubbles in low pressure areas of the turbine.
Most of the rock art we’ve seen this summer has been carved. These pictographs were painted. The rock was removed from the area that was flooded after completion of the dam.
After we found the geocache in the garden, we talked with the owner of this fruit stand.
This was our haul. The coach is gonna smell good as those peaches ripen. We also bought yellow plums, apples, pluots, and sweet onions–all local.
An earth cache took us to a spot with nice views of the Columbia River.
We had to solve a puzzle to know a geocache was located at the library in Chelan.
We discovered there were eight caches around Manson and that finding all of them would earn us a trackable souvenir. And we were off!
Dave had to sweet talk the bees to let us through the lavender-bordered path.
Most of the stops for the Manson series were at wineries and cider houses. The area around Lake Chelan is ideal for growing fruit like these pears.
We saw LOTS of apple trees, some grown traditionally and some on trellises.
These apple trees are just getting established.
The owner of the winery and her three sons stopped to chat as Jane was finding the cache near these grapes.
These quail had trouble deciding how to get out of our way.
