The drive from Harlingen to McMahan was about 280 miles, about four and a half hours for us.  The first third was mostly divided four-lane highway with a fair bit of traffic.  The last part was on lightly traveled smaller roads lined with wildflowers.

The Plant Snap app thinks this is a sword lily; we think it’s Indian paintbrush

Our home for the next month is Lake Falling Star RV Resort.  Sites are generous and include concrete picnic areas and a view of Lake Falling Star.

We are enjoying the generously-sized site.

Somebody’s got a green thumb! The resort is small (50 sites) but has lots of nice touches.

Not quite so nice a touch was this scorpion Jane found in the campground shower.

Here’s a photo from across the lake.

Our our-of-focus rig is just right of center behind the flat-roofed open structure.

Groceries are 20 minutes away and Austin and San Antonio are each about an hour. The closest town is McMahan and it’s less than a mile away but is only a few structures.  Its commercial section includes a modern convenience store and a handful of buildings that were sold as a group in 2006.

We’re told this restaurant serves good pizza and features great music.

Whizzerville was an informal name for the area (something to do with a horse and rider speeding either down the street or into the saloon) but the Post Office rejected it, reportedly for being too many letters.  The town was named for a storekeeper, and the McMahan post office was opened in 1898.

Is that a dilapidated wishing well beside the water tower that has character but no pipes?

We hope we don’t have to use this gauge.

And we hope the drainage system is better maintained than the sign.
