Some things don’t quite live up to the hype.

A developer planned to build a sanitarium at the site of a hot springs near Lakeview, Oregon in 1923. While digging a water well, workers struck a geyser in three different locations, one of which “never let up”, according to information at the site of the hot springs. The water well was completed about 1/4 mile away.

We went to Hunter’s Hot Springs Resort to visit the geyser. It looked as if we would have to walk on hotel property which appeared to be under construction so we went to the front desk to make sure it would be OK. We rang the bell. Two dogs came bounding into the office, and seemed to approve of us but didn’t assure us that we wouldn’t be trespassing if we proceeded. A few minutes later Dave located a construction worker who told us a little about the geyser–mostly that it had dried up a few months back as it tends to do in the summer. He told us to go ahead and have a look.

The dining room and bar at the resort have recently reopened and it’s obvious that improvements are being made to the property. It’s also obvious that the owners have a long way to go.
