Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sealab

The Estuarium is a public aquarium operated by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.  The Lab offers courses of study and conducts research on the ecosystems in the area.

Many oil rigs are visible from shore.

Fort Gaines 

Fort Gaines was established in 1821 and played key roles in the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.


Indian Shell Mound Park 

The mound on which this park rests is made of oysters shells discarded by natives from about 1100 to 1550.

    I really enjoy the Gulf coast, too, Jay. I lived in St. Petersburg when I was in elementary school and then again in college, so the Gulf always feels like home to me.

I always thought the oil rigs were much farther out from the shore. This is very interesting. I am learning a lot of history from your posts

    We were surprised at how close they were, too. And in North Dakota, we passed many wells on our very close to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I thought I would feel as if the rigs were intruding on nature, but it didn’t feel that way. Of course, everything appeared to be working as it was supposed to.
