First White House of the ConfederacyJefferson Davis lived here with his family from February until Summer 1861 when the capital of the Confederacy was moved to Richmond, Virginia.

The Liberty Cap [Also called a Phrygian cap.  The statue Marianne in Mobile wore one.] used in the cast iron ventilators is unique to the First White House of the Confederacy and has been adopted as the special emblem of the building, according to resource materials provided at the building.

In case you were wondering, there follows an excellent description of the flags of the Confederacy.  The familiar red flag with the blue cross was a battle flag, not the “Stars and Bars”.

Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church

The church was built between 1883 and 1889.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. served as senior pastor here from 1954 to 1958.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott was planned in this room.  Jane stands behind a podium Dr. King used.
