On the Streets of Montgomery

This fountain was placed in Court Square in 1885, but the artesian well over which it was erected had been used by natives long before the two communities of Alabama Town and New Philadelphia merged to become Montgomery.  The square was the central location of Montgomery’s slave trade.

The Winter building, above, is sited on Court Square. The telegram authorizing the bombardment of Fort Sumter was sent from here in 1861, beginning military action of the Civil War.

The bus stop where Rosa Parks got on the bus and refused to give up her seat is also near the fountain.  The Selma-to-Montgomery march for civil rights passed through Court Square on the way to the capitol.

Some wonderful renovations, restorations and are taking place in the area around the capitol.

A contemporary glass facade wraps this RSA building.  The stairs are modeled after the grand staircase in a New York courthouse which in turn was inspired by the Paris Opera House.

A few blocks away we enjoyed this Fall display.

The renovated Union Station hosts the visitors center, a restaurant and other businesses.  It backs up to the Alabama River.
