The drive from Las Cruces, NM to Odessa, TX was 330 miles and took us: Seven hours. The rig is teaching us how to minimize sway but we’re still keeping the speed just under 60 MPH. We had to exit I-20 for a short detour and as we did, the check engine light in the truck came on, cruise control quit, and navigation disappeared. After restarting the car after stopping for gas, everything returned–including the check engine light.

Dave took the truck to a dealer in Odessa and learned the check engine fault was “improbable data”. So much for sophisticated systems. While he was there he asked about a persistent warning for a low tire. We thought the notice wasn’t clearing, but it turns out the tire had four large thorns in it, and that one of them had gone through the sidewall. We now have four new tires better designed both to tow the trailer and to handle the occasional foray off road.

Our RV park in Odessa may have looked like electrical service poles were installed in an ocean of sparsely-vegetated sand, but the facilities were very nice. Our site had a perfectly level concrete pad for the trailer with an adjacent concrete patio. Amenities included a duck/fish pond with a lighted fountain, showers, laundry, indoor basketball court and fitness center, community kitchen, and a playground.

The pump jack in the middle of the park wasn’t working but is still interesting.
Jane took a few minutes and learned that the trailer’s steps make a good seat for dulcimer-playing.

The area had some interesting geocaches including one in Midland, Texas where two future presidents (George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush), two future governors (George W. Bush and Jeb Bush), and one future first lady (Barbara Bush) lived from 1951 until 1955.
