A quinta is a  country house, villa or estate and Mazatlan is the Mexican city that inspired the builders of the  house, Marcia Jamieson and Jason Chilton Matthews.  An ancient Indian translation of Mazatlan is “Land of the Deer”.

The house was built in the late 1930’s of adobe bricks made on-site.  The city of McAllen acquired the home in 1998 and uses it as an example of restoration of native habitat in an urban environment–McAllen International Airport is across the street.

These rocks form an amphitheater at a bird feeding station. We saw our first green jays here.

Green jay on the left, golden-fronted woodpecker on the right.

The ants were carrying off all the corn they could from the feeding station.
